Hawk + Tippy Headroom = Free Air!

Long-time fan and YouTube maestro Sonney Dey wrote to let me know about his latest creation– I’ll tentatively describe it as an experimental hawk documentary, but as you can see, it’s so much more than just that.

Sonney’s video makes great use of a very old track of mine, “Tippy Headroom,” from my very first album, “Music For a Sick Cat.” The title is a play on actress Tippy Hedren (of “The Birds,”) as well as Max Headroom (style icon, and personal hero).

I still remember recording “Tippy Headroom” on the floor of my home. I had been inspired by a sound experiment described in a book about Jimi Hendrix, which I had read many years earlier, but found floating about in my brain that day– in a nutshell, Hendrix had been using headphone monitors to slowly feed back into his microphone, causing squealing pitches to occur. A tape delay setup helped to create a seagull-like sound he found quite interesting. Although I’d never heard a recording of this experiment, I suppose I had a pretty good idea of how it would turn out… resulting in “Tippy Headroom.”

As a reward for Sonney’s ongoing dedication to fully experiencing the Other through my music, I’m mailing him a bunch of cool stuff– including a copy of my latest release “Free Air.” There’s only a few of these left, from a way-limited edition of ten. “Free Air” comes with two long-form works originally intended for through-home surround systems, mixed specially for stereo. There’s also the nifty artwork, a bright red unicorn hand-printed by yours truly! The print is sealed and numbered, with the disc in a separate compartment.

It’s taken me a while to mentally return from this weekend’s “Circuit Benders’ Ball” in Nashville, run by Ore: Theatre Intangible host Tony Youngblood. There were a number of terrific sets; I particularly enjoyed those from Robbie Hunsinger, Thriftstore Boratorium, Tim Kaiser, and Freya West. I’m not certain my own set was quite up to par, but seemed have been well-received regardless.

Capping the evening, however, went particularly well. I was invited to participate in a group improvisation with Tim Kaiser, Thriftsore Boratorium, Jeremy Walker, and Lola Wilson. I decided early to avoid a classic “Ore” pitfall, and keep my contributions relatively simple. Given that I had taken “Lawrence Welk’s Secret Shame” to the Ball as my instrument of choice, I knew that I would only be able to go so far in battling it’s rhythmic nature in an improvisational setting. I’ve found ways to extend it’s performance capabilities, but providing a steady beat is basically the heart of this device. That’s why I was pleased to discover ways to employ its natural electrical hum in useful ways during the opening portions of the improv session. What you’re hearing deep in the background is the rising and falling swells of electrical hum of the machine, bounded by rhythmic body contact touches altering the tone in subtle ways.

Later on, some audience members helped provide some additional tonal control, helping extend my circuit through their bodies. We got some great sounds, and made the whole bending process a lot more fun.

I’ve got a lot of cool stuff coming up this weekend, so here’s your guide:

1) New broadcasts of “It’s Too Damn Early” and “Sounds Like Radio.” In case you’ve been living under a rock, “It’s Too Damn Early” airs Saturday mornings on WDBX-FM from 4-6:30 a.m. “Sounds Like Radio airs twice a week Sundays on WSIU-FM, from 3-5 a.m., and from 10 p.m. to midnight. Both episodes are going to be amazing.

2) I’m hosting a soundwalk of the SIUC campus. If you’re interested, meet outside the Student Center on the North end at 10:30 a.m. this Saturday. The soundwalk is free, and takes about an hour.

3) I’m performing in Nashville, as part of the Circuit Benders’ Ball. I’ll be employing “Lawrence Welk’s Secret Shame” for this show, which I have recently re-modified to include even more champagne secrets. The Circuit Benders’ Ball will feature performances by Tim Kaiser, Thriftstore Boratorium, CMKT4, Ben Marcantel, and others. There are also instrument-building workshops, visual art, and video projections. This is an all-ages event with tickets starting at $15 for general admittance, $30 including both workshops. 4) I’ve got a new release out! “Free Air” is a CDR documentation featuring sound installations I originally created for multi-speaker through-home environments. Each copy comes with a sealed unicorn woodblock print, and is part of a limited and numbered edition of 10. These will be available first at the Circuit Benders’ Ball.

I’m in the mood for some drone today, so get ready for some loooong tracks! The David First set is really terrific, absolutely top-notch. It was nice to get it on following the Alok mini– I’m not certain the extreme low end of his stuff came through too well on radio, but it sounded great here.

I’m about halfway through the show now… well, a little past half, and I’m crushed for time! I could do a few more hours this morning, easy.

I’m really enjoying this David First anthology from XI Records! My recommendation– pick up a copy, play it loudly, and feel those drones push through the room.

I’m playing now from “Camaraderie,” a collaborative release from My Fun, John Ira Ebersole, and Kimberly Ellen Hall on The Land Of label. It’s a CD, paired with a lovely little book of Ebersole’s poetry. Of course, Hall’s amazing deign sense is throughout– if you’ve had a chance to check out any releases for The Land Of, you’ve encountered her work, and will recognize the style. This is undoubtedly a hallmark effort for the label, which I’m going to start recommending quite highly already.

I just realized that until the 9th, I get somewhat symmetrical dates! It all falls apart with a bang on the 10th, followed by a timed release of chaser symmetry on the 11th and 22nd– just enough to get me through. Anyways, I’m listening to “Sounds Like Radio,” digging on this Grundik & Slava track, which apparently never made the cut to an actual album. I wonder about what happened to it… I’ve always enjoyed that one, and I know it’s on at least one of my “Mystery Tapes,” as it put a smile on my face during one of my periodic “quality checks.” If you’ll allow me a quick digression, I should mention that two more Mystery Tapes have been released during the past 30 days. Keep an eye out for them, my tape distribution agents are widely scattered; occasionally, they do not even know they’ve been selected for the job!

Well, I’m a chatty thing. Two songs in, and I still haven’t got the playlist up. Yikes! Dig the similarities between the John Morton track and the Grundik/Slava cut. So many odd similarities!

I must’ve had a thing for bells when I selected these tracks. Seems like they’re popping up everywhere. Currently, listening to “Walking By the Refinery.” Eek, now there’s a promo with Somali soldiers. There’s a downer for you! Speaking of a downer, I think my vocals need to improve. Anyone have some tips for me? I think the sound is accurate, but they just seem a bit flat to me. Is it the lack of typical radio compression, etc, or something I could improve without too much trickery?

Digging on Glenn Weyant’s “Natural Electronics” right now. Sometimes, when I put together a show like this, I get a kick out of watching how low some of the levels are. I don’t think that many radio broadcasts explore such a wide range of dynamics, but of course, I have nothing more than my own experiences with radio to go on.

Wow! I had forgotten how well these two tracks fit together. I don’t think I even noticed the exact crossover point between “Natural Electronics” and “Essl Museum.”
