Sad, sad news

February 26, 2009

Quit making popcorn, and putting up streamers. Stop yourself in mid-whirl. Put down the amphetamines– there will be no broadcast of “It’s Too Damn Early” for the next two weeks.

Although some will tell you that I’m taking a vacation in the sunny Bahamas, I’m sure you’ll all know that this is just a front… I’ve actually gotten a heads-up from my future self that the next two shows were going to completely suck anyway. Future DaveX said that if I want to avoid a career-killing decision involving a Ja Rule album, a lock groove, and a 1.21 gigawatt FM transmitter that I’d better lay low for awhile.

I’ll see you all again on March 14th. I’ll bring the future sounds, you bring the plutonium.

Stay cool,

–DaveX

Liveblogging! Commentary for “ITDE” 2/21/09

February 21, 2009

Still no DJ to host the 2-4 a.m. slot, so I decided to come in a bit early. I really enjoy adding the extra hour to my broadcast; three-and-a-half hours is just perfect for “It’s Too Damn Early.” I’m going to be making a bit more effort to speak on-air today– although, I’ll admit, I’m really compelled to just stay silent and let the music speak for itself. It’s a battle!

Playing the Misco minidisc now– damn, this is brilliant stuff. Seriously, go buy it.

Ack. Someone just asked me if I meant “Leeroy Jenkins,” some sort of character from World of Warcraft. This is why I hate people. Educate yourselves!

Obama sighted in vintage Miami bass video

February 19, 2009

I don’t know if it’s real or not– but I gotta admit– I like living in a world where it’s POSSIBLE. Skip to 0:47 for Obama and his giant cell phone, yo.

How I spent my last three hours

February 12, 2009

I like WALL-E a lot, but generally not enough to spend three hours constructing him from Lego blocks. Of course, four-year-olds are demanding critters… To understand the enormity of this task, please keep in mind that my newest Legos are at least 20 years old. This WALL-E is part Eldorado Fortress, and part Black Monarch’s Castle– old school!

WALL-E can load his garbage block, has movable arms, and a door that opens and closes. His head is heavy and fragile.

Liveblogging! Commentary for “ITDE” 2/7/09

I got in a bit early today– WDBX still hasn’t filled the vacant time slot prior to my broadcast– so I’ve got a lot of interesting recordings to share with you ready to go. As an added listener benefit, I feel somewhat guilty, having assisted an acquaintence with the setup of her daughter’s new iPod… filled up with new country pop garbage, and Don McLean’s ubiquitous “American Pie” stuck like an unlikely cherry on the pile. Everyone is welcome to their own tastes, but I still wanted to put something a bit more “nutritious” in the mix; if you’re going to dig country, how about some honky-tonk classics? Or maybe a bit of bluegrass?

For now, I’ll content myself with playing this Conure disc, “Stream,” from Edgetone Records. This is seriously noisy stuff, but very well put-together also. I find it a bit hard to listen to– somehow, “Stream” keeps getting me in these reveries, and the music skips on ahead. There is a re-focusing, but inevitably some small detail in the mix will pull me away. Difficult, but enjoyable!

Towards the end of The Epicureans’ disc (incidentally, a highly-engrossing listen), a guest dropped by– he’s expressed some interest in starting a show at WDBX-FM, and much discussion of music followed. Here is your playlist, take care until next week! –DaveX

“Unheard Music” pdf for you to read

February 6, 2009

Someone just posted this on the Silence listserv– a rather interesting .pdf file, “Unheard Music.” It’s written by Craig Dworkin, detailing various silent (and nearly silent) musical works.

It’s not terribly long, but there sure are a lot of fascinating examples!

Did you miss a show?

February 3, 2009

Here they are, downloadable mp3 versions of every “It’s Too Damn Early” broadcast for 2009 so far. Each file is ripped directly from the WDBX-FM streaming audio, and encoded as an mp3. As always, I offer these to you in the same spirit as the live broadcast themselves– a chance to hear something new, not a replacement for your support of the artists and labels involved. Because these are ripped using a timer, files often begin slightly inside the start of the broadcast. See the linked playlists for these shows at their original liveblogged entries.

I’ll be working through my backlog of 2008 shows that have yet to be uploaded in the next couple days, so keep an eye out for these as well. They’re coming!

1/31/09 — It’s Too Damn Early’s 7th Birthday broadcast! In lieu of a gift, listeners everywhere turn their friends on to STARTLING MONIKER. Features Warm Climate, Bearly Queen, Mystified, Wooden Sherpa, Kim Cascone, and more. (playlist here)

1/24/09— DaveX is wrapped up in two million five hundred thousand tonnes of spinning metal, all alone in the night. Features Armpit, Shelf Life, Bearses, Bob Marsh, and more. (playlist here)

1/17/09— In which our hero subverts the broadcasts of three other radio stations. Features my Top Albums for 2008 picks! (playlist here)

1/10/09— The deaf were healed, but their joy was brief. The 2nd annual MERZ-SHOW! Featuring (work with me here) Merzbow. (playlist here)

1/03/09— DaveX goes bananas, hosts a Vacation Show. Features non-experimental goodness from Confunkshun, Swirlies, Sir Cedric Hardwicke, Neil Young, and more. (no playlist)
