Liveblogging! “It’s Too Damn Early,” 10/30/11

October 30, 2011

I’m covering for Emma’s “Style City” show today, so this is the “awake and cogent” version of my usual broadcast, haha. It’s been fun so far– definitely different to have the sun streaming in the windows!

Be sure to check out Dolphin Logic’s “Replicant Embolisms” album, btw. They’re local, and they’re keeping it weird– plus, I hear their show at the Douglass Art School went well! I’ll have to see about getting them on-air soon!

Hmm. I just got a “text-to-voice” message from a caller who says: “This is white noise, not music. I’m turning to country.” So I called them back, and left my own message. Next time, Jimerson Montgomery Phillips III (really?!) should grow a pair and call me himself.

Joe Lasqo — Choshi (from “Turquoise Sessions,” on Edgetone)
Gen Ken Montgomery — Friedhof (from “Birds + Machines,” on Pogus)
Dolphin Logic — Her Eyes Were A Burning Laser (from “Replicant Embolisms,” self-release)

I was pretty happy to play the new Chefkirk album, “We Must Leave The Warren,” out now on Bryan Day’s Eh? label. Day has been sticking it to thematic music for a long while now, and frankly, I’m happy to see Chefkirk’s disc in such good company. It’s no secret that I’ve dug every Chefkirk recording I’ve managed to hear, but this one seems particularly right— high tones that pierce your face; low end that rattles the room; and every sort of scratchy, squelchy noise in between. Anyone playing no-input mixers will probably face a Toshimaru Nakamura comparison at some point in time, but Chefkirk’s offerings still come out strong. It’s partly due to the obvious familiarity with his gear, but paradoxically, it’s his naked efforts to push and explore the confined space of the mixer that set this disc apart from Nakamura’s more meditative fare.

It’s been a while since I’ve been posting regularly– for this I apologize. Things have been going well with both of my radio shows, but I’ve been slacking a bit lately with getting things up here as well. Feeling crunched for time, I guess… but probably just being a bit scattered. While I’m getting my mental together, how about sending me some new music recommendations or recordings? In the meantime, enjoy the playlist. –DaveX
