Liveblogging! “It’s Too Damn Style” 1/22/12

January 22, 2012

I’m covering for “Style City” today, so it’s feeling a bit bright and sunny in the studio– even with all these horrid grey skies! I imagine that will make today’s show a bit different than usual. Another big influence on today’s programming will be the presence of the brand-spanking-new “L” volume of GX Jupitter-Larsen’s “Zelphabet” series. As any reader/listener of mine will know, I’m a big fan. In addition to being an incredible source for noise lovers to discover overlooked or under-promoted musicians, the quality of the contributions has been consistently high– compilations might be a dime a dozen, but there are precious few (especially of this scope) that would honestly elicit such description.

Eric Glick-Rieman — The Past, Aerated (from “In My Mind, her Image Was Reversed,” on Accretions)
Toshio Kajiwara, Marina Rosenfeld, Christian Marclay — New York, 8/21/03 (from “DJ Trio,” on Asphodel)
Lovely Little Girls — Chunky Dog-Like Face (from “Glamorous Piles & Puffy Saddlebags,” on Apop Records)
Lovely Little Girls — Creeping Things Dig Slowly
Lovely Little Girls — Wretched Substitute
Don Campau — Jungle of Misunderstanding (from album of the same name, on Lonely Whistle)
Lasse Marhaug — Zen (this, and next three, from “L” volume of “Zelphabet“)
Leather Bath — Armistice
Leticia Castaneda — Museum for the Blind
Lionel Marchetti — Natura Morta

Liveblogging! “It’s Too Damn Early,” 1/21/12

January 21, 2012

Whew! I’m kind of tired out this morning. I was happy to take a few nice calls, though– it’s always nice to hear from listeners. Next week is the 10th anniversary of “It’s Too Damn Early” airing on WDBX-FM, so I’m pretty excited about that. Although I don’t have an exact count personally, this is about 500 shows! Seems like a fair number– I’ve missed some, but I’ve also covered a bunch. At any rate, it’s been a lot of fun, and I know I’ve had a great time learning about experimental music (as well as sharing it with you).

Litnoise from Knut Hamsun’s “Wanderers”

January 8, 2012

“At the first thrill of the organ I was torn from my setting and came near to sobbing. “Keep quiet, you fool,” I said to myself, “it’s only neurasthenia.”” –Wanderers

Okay, so it looks like Kendra Steiner Editions is getting added to my short list of favorite labels. How did I miss this for so long? I must be slipping. Folks, you need to hold me to a higher standard! But seriously, the latest addition is #214, so I have a lot to fill in. My birthday is in April, please give generously, haha.

Also, Dolphin Logic’s EP is almost out on Tundra Dubs. Listen in next week, and I’ll play some more of it. You gotta love an album with a track named “Wet Goddess.”

Oh! A bit more Litnoise from “Arrowsmith”

January 5, 2012

These are all too long for Twitter! Still, this is a great quote– definitely going to be a hard one to beat:

“Sound of mating birds, sound of spring blossoms dropping in the tranquil air, the bark of sleepy dogs at midnight; who is to set them down and make them anything but hackneyed?” –Arrowsmith

Litnoise from Sinclair Lewis’ “Arrowsmith”

January 5, 2012

This is a great quote. As I continue to work on Litnoise, I find these demonstrations of active listening to be quite rare indeed:

“The boy listened sharply. He heard the Doc open the lower part of the washstand, where he kept his bottle of Jamaica rum. After a long gurgle the invisible Doc put away the bottle and decisively kicked the doors shut. Still good. Only one drink. If he came into the consultation-room at once, he would be safe. But he was still standing in the bedroom. Martin sighed as the washstand doors were hastily opened again, as he heard another gurgle and a third.” –Arrowsmith
