I’m back! (A Quick-Start Guide to DaveX)

November 16, 2015

Sorry for the gigantic delay. My last post of merit was written one year, six months, and nine days ago! To say that things have been a little rough is an understatement. Since that time, I have graduated from university, accepted a full-time position managing a community radio station, and gotten divorced. I’ve had more than a few close encounters with my depression, and have been just about as low (off and on) as I ever hope I’ll get. I’ve assured myself that it’s a terribly boring story, so I’m going to quickly skip you to the present with a handy “quick-start” guide:

I’m DaveX. I’ve been interested in sound for as long as I can remember, but I didn’t always know it. I’ve hosted numerous radio programs featuring experimental music, each with a focus on active listening. I have two children, “Mo” and “The Weasel.” I manage a small community radio station that is not unlike running The Muppet Show. I have problems with depression, but I’m still hopeful. I enjoy collecting records and tapes, reading, and circuit-bending. I make noisy things (and sometimes, I sell them!) I’m a vegetarian. I like comic books, photobooths, and kung-fu movies. Dee Snider saved my life, and I will happily read your John Cage fan-fiction.

This week, I’m on vacation from work, so I’m going to be getting back into blogging. To kick things off, I’ve uploaded my latest episode of “Music For Swimmers” to SoundCloud. You can listen to it online, or download the files. Ordinarily, this is a one-hour program, but Mo was sick today, so it’s closer to 2 hours and 15 minutes. The playlist is below– enjoy!

Liveblogging! “Music For Swimmers,” 2/17/13

February 17, 2013

I’m playing from vinyl acquired during my local university’s library cleanout a couple weeks back. I’ve been quite happy with many of my finds, which include vintage works from Cage, Pousseur, Stockhausen, Brown, Antheil, Xenakis, and many others. I feel incredibly lucky to not only have an opportunity to get my hands on these albums, but to save them from what was otherwise going to become a trip to the dump. Hard to believe, isn’t it? If you’re excited about what you’re hearing on “Music For Swimmers,” be sure to tune in to “Sounds Like Radio” tonight as well– I’ll have even more cuts from these records, each better than the last. If you’re not sure how to tune in, just look in the sidebar for “Sounds Like Radio,” and be sure to leave me a comment!

Ton Bruynel — Arc (from “Visual Series 7072/1,” on Donemus)
Iannis Xenakis — Polla Ta Dhina (this, and next, from “Album 2,” on Angel)
Iannis Xenakis — ST/10 = 1-080262

“Music For Swimmers” liveblog/playlist for 9/30/12

September 30, 2012

I’m having some fun with old Contrastate material today– mixing stuff from the “English Embers” album with the “I” cassette, just because I like how it works together. Mo’s “Style City” broadcast was a good mood-setting today, blending some fairly off-kilter chiptunes stuff into a nice, workable mix. Maybe DJing isn’t the most amazing talent, but I’m still awfully proud; she’s definitely gotten the hang of things in the last couple years. I’ve got some nice recordings to share today as well– the “Hot Choice” album by Breakaway that I reviewed the other day, as well as a really nifty compilation album on Barge that I picked up for a Loren Connors cut, and ended up really digging across the album.

As a sidenote, if anyone from Nuun Records or Metamkine is reading this, thanks for sending the Pauline Oliveros/Jesse Stewart “Dunrobin Session” album. I found it lodged in the station’s currently-hoarder-worthy library room, where it had obviously been opened for me, and discarded. Not sure how long this one has been AWOL– but trust me, I don’t make a habit of ignoring Oliveros material, or any promos sent my way for that matter.

Contrastate — Invocation to the Rite of Birth (from “I,” on Direction Music)
Contrastate — The Rite of Birth
Contrastate — Northern Twilight (from “English Embers,” on Dirter)
The Fun Years — Electricity Is A Scarce Commodity (this, and next six, from “Innature,” on Barge Recordings)
The Kallikak Family — Purity Music, Purity Sound
Bird Show — Stay High
Polmo Polpo — Farewell to the Flyer
Loren Connors — Outside My Window
Animal Hospital — Late Summertime

June 17, 2012

I decided to play older stuff today– not necessarily in relation to its release date, but “older” in terms of when I last played it. I don’t think I’ve played any of these since 2005 at the latest, and it’s possible that one or two never made it on the show at all, but were just present in the mix happening behind-the-scenes. Wouldn’t that be fascinating by the way? To hear a mix of all the things I didn’t necessarily air, but that influenced what I did broadcast. I’d sure love to hear that! By the way, just a heads-up– the next episode of “Sounds Like Radio” is going to be kick-ass. I’m really getting the feel of that show lately, and I’m excited about this particular episode. be sure to tune in tomorrow and check it out.

Mira Calix – Routine (The Dancing Bear) (from “One On One,” on Warp Records)
John Oswald — O Hell (from “Plunderphonic,” on Mystery Tape Laboratory)
David Tudor — Rainforest Version I (from “Rainforest,” on Mode)
Zoviet France — Alchemagenta (from “Digilogue,” on Soleilmoon)
René Lussier, Martin Tétreault — Tellure (from “Qu’ouïs’je?” on Ambiances Magnetiques)
René Lussier, Martin Tétreault — Aventure
René Lussier, Martin Tétreault — Faufilure

June 10, 2012

Well, I just got done being interviewed for Emma’s “Pony Party 2012” edition of Style City, where we discussed “Friendship Is Magic,” favorite ponies, pony songs, etc. A pretty cool show, but a bit of a jumbled mess moving from one show to the other. Fortunately, I’ve got Pilesar’s “Radio Friendly” album from Public Eyesore to help me transition!

Jean-Marc Montera, Francesco Calandrino — Untitled #3 (from “Idi di Marzo,” on Eh?)
Pilesar — Slipping On Eggs On the Floor (from “Radio Friendly,” on Public Eyesore)
Pilesar — Hit The Door
Pilesar — My Friend Sunshine
Pilesar — Slight Case of Clown
Jacob Felix Heule, Bryce Beverlin II — Live at Art of This, Minneapolis, 8/3/10 (from “Intersects,” on Eh?)

Once again, covering Emma’s “Style City” today, so I decided to make excellent use of my additional 1.5 hours and play the entirety of Robert Ashley’s opera, “Now Eleanor’s Idea.” It’s one of my all-time favorites, and I’m delighted to bring it to a bigger, more awake, bunch of listeners. So many nice calls today about it, too. That always makes things nice! At any rate, if the playlist looks a little short today, remember that pieces 1 and 2 are awfully long! Thanks for listening– tune in next Sunday from 5-6pm CST on 91.1FM locally, or stream at WDBX if you’re somewhere more interesting. Until then, take care!

Liveblogging! “Music for Swimmers” 4/15/12

April 15, 2012

Today was the first episode of my show in it’s new 5-6pm Sunday time slot– I think it went very well! I’m used to having a lot more space to stretch out in, so this was different, but fun. Earlier, I compared the experience to working as a short order cook after spending a long time working entirely with crock pots. My special “no interruptions” arrangement with the station manager lets me avoid playing any promos or underwriting during my show, which definitely helps. I also did a lot more quick transitions than usual– I won’t do this for every show, but I wanted to kick things off with some improv mixing and collage. It felt right. Ordinarily, I intend to stick by my “no excerpts” rule, which may prove interesting in terms of focus during a one-hour show. There’s definitely a lot less room for error, though; I believe this may be an interesting challenge. If you heard today’s show, leave a comment and tell me what you thought. I’m curious how things went on your end. –DaveX

“It’s Too Damn Early” is now… “Music For Swimmers”

April 15, 2012

With the move to the new 5-6pm show time, I realized that “It’s Too Damn Early” was no longer an appropriate name for my show. So, while my focus on experimental music, the avant-garde, sound art, and noise has not changed– the name has!

Say hello to “Music For Swimmers.”

I love picking out names for things. This time around, I looked to John Cage for inspiration, and found it in one of his many stories– in this case, one that was included on his Folkways recording with David Tudor, “Indeterminacy.” I’ve reproduced a screen capture from an online archive of the stories below, though I hope that you’ll check out the other stories as well. I’m not sure how the name works out if you think about it too hard, but I enjoyed the absurdity– a program of music for people who aren’t listening? Electrical devices in a marine environment? I suspect that “Music For Swimmers” will find its meaning with time. Until then, I’m looking forward to spending that time listening and staying afloat with you. –DaveX

Before you go any further, do yourself a favor and pick up a copy of “Closed Encounters of the 4 Minds,” on Public Eyesore. I’m really quite taken with this one– some of the old-school electronic sounds just leap out at you, and it doesn’t hurt that the 4th track is ridiculously catchy. The album hasn’t left my stereo since it arrived, so you’ve been warned. Don’t sleep on it!

February 18, 2012

It’s freakin’ Promo City over here, so next week is going to be awesome! I’m staring down new stuff from Tom Hamilton, idM TheftAble, and if, Bwana; not to mention a couple new ones from the Pogus label as well– Noah Creshevsky, Leo Kupper… goddamn, these guys know what moves me! If that wasn’t good enough, there’s also new stuff from the Cuneiform and Abzu labels, and a couple self-releases from brand-new folks– it’s always good to hear from new people, keep ’em coming!

I’m definitely looking forward to playing this Davis Redford Triad LP, “The Mystical Path of the Number Eighty-Six,” a Holy Mountain release that probably won’t make many journeys out of my home in the future. I hope you’re listening! (And hey, a big thanks to Lou’s Records in Encinitas, CA for helping me find this one!)

OMG, can’t believe I forgot (I told you this was a good night!) but I’ve also got two new LPs from ZeroMoon, whose “intelligent noise music” has always rung true to my ears– Blue Sausage Infant’s “Negative Space,” and “District of Noise Vol. 4,” which features Washington D.C. area noise artists. I won’t have time for both on today’s program, but you’ll definitely hear each over the next few weeks, most likely on both programs.

Lastly, The Claudia Quintet (with Theo Bleckmann) will be in St. Louis for a New Music Circle event on March 2nd at the 560 Music Center Ballroom. I’ll have some free tickets to giveaway next week, so make plans to listen in– maybe they’ll be yours!

Liveblogging! “It’s Too Damn Style” 1/22/12

January 22, 2012

I’m covering for “Style City” today, so it’s feeling a bit bright and sunny in the studio– even with all these horrid grey skies! I imagine that will make today’s show a bit different than usual. Another big influence on today’s programming will be the presence of the brand-spanking-new “L” volume of GX Jupitter-Larsen’s “Zelphabet” series. As any reader/listener of mine will know, I’m a big fan. In addition to being an incredible source for noise lovers to discover overlooked or under-promoted musicians, the quality of the contributions has been consistently high– compilations might be a dime a dozen, but there are precious few (especially of this scope) that would honestly elicit such description.

Eric Glick-Rieman — The Past, Aerated (from “In My Mind, her Image Was Reversed,” on Accretions)
Toshio Kajiwara, Marina Rosenfeld, Christian Marclay — New York, 8/21/03 (from “DJ Trio,” on Asphodel)

Folks, you need to hold me to a higher standard! But seriously, the latest addition is #214, so I have a lot to fill in. My birthday is in April, please give generously, haha.

Also, Dolphin Logic’s EP is almost out on Tundra Dubs. Listen in next week, and I’ll play some more of it. You gotta love an album with a track named “Wet Goddess.”
