Liveblogging while I cover a show…

March 26, 2013

I’m covering for another DJ today, so I quickly packed a bag and heading in to the station. I’ve got a fairly large amount of music with me, so this should be a fun time! Just for formatting kicks, I’ll insert the playlist between thoughts…

Coin Gutter — Timewise (from “All Your Dreams Are Meaningless,” on NoType)
My Fun — Black Sky (from “Idyll EP” on Test Tube

I figured out an interesting little “jog” technique using our CD players, quite by accident. I was not aware that you could trick it into staying put in active mode on a single frame of the disc– so I opened the Insect Ark cut with a little jog improv, which sounded great.

Insect Ark — Lift Off
Pierre-Andre Arcand — Paradoxal (from “Atlas Epileptic,” on Ambiances Magnetiques)

I noticed that the “Dj Trios” disc featured a track recorded at Bard College, whose “Office of Student Life Programming” assisted with putting on the original concert. Seems fun that we are now the unintended beneficiaries of their effort– thanks Bard College!

Christian Marclay, Toshio Kajiwara, Marina Rosenfeld — Annandale-on-Hudson, November 19, 2003 (from “DJ Trios,” on Asphodel)
Felix Lachance — Manege I (from “Cache 2009,” on CEC)

Jeez. Only when dealing with experimental music will a DJ find himself describing the Greek root words for “behind” and “anus” in relation to a family of fish. Luckily, the music is worth it. Hope you’re enjoying this!

Christoph Erb, Jim Baker, Michael Zerang — Opisthoproctidae (from “Erb, Baker, Zerang” on Veto Records)
Psychotic Quartet — We Are All 11 or 26 Dimensions (from “Sphaleron,” on Eh?)

Whew! Feeling tired tonight. As much as I enjoy filling in, I’m definitely going to enjoy getting back home. Plus, I won’t have Tom Selleck staring at me. I was using a pirate flag here at the station as a curtain between the master studio and my office, which has a big window (it used to be a studio as well). As near as I can tell, someone mistook the Jolly Roger for Old Scratch, prompting a quick switch on my part. In a pinch, Tom Selleck– via his “Mr. Baseball” days– made a decent substitution in movie poster form; his ample arm hair, twinkling eyes and thick mustache surely no match for anything cloven-hoofed. But now he stares at me, happily brandishing his ball bat. I’m not sure if we’re any better off.

Ministry of Rites — Embers (from “Grid,” on Edgetone)
CJ Borosque, Robert M. — Beautiful (from “Beautiful,” on Edgetone)

“Music For Swimmers” liveblog/playlist for 9/30/12

September 30, 2012

I’m having some fun with old Contrastate material today– mixing stuff from the “English Embers” album with the “I” cassette, just because I like how it works together. Mo’s “Style City” broadcast was a good mood-setting today, blending some fairly off-kilter chiptunes stuff into a nice, workable mix. Maybe DJing isn’t the most amazing talent, but I’m still awfully proud; she’s definitely gotten the hang of things in the last couple years. I’ve got some nice recordings to share today as well– the “Hot Choice” album by Breakaway that I reviewed the other day, as well as a really nifty compilation album on Barge that I picked up for a Loren Connors cut, and ended up really digging across the album.

As a sidenote, if anyone from Nuun Records or Metamkine is reading this, thanks for sending the Pauline Oliveros/Jesse Stewart “Dunrobin Session” album. I found it lodged in the station’s currently-hoarder-worthy library room, where it had obviously been opened for me, and discarded. Not sure how long this one has been AWOL– but trust me, I don’t make a habit of ignoring Oliveros material, or any promos sent my way for that matter.

Contrastate — Invocation to the Rite of Birth (from “I,” on Direction Music)
Contrastate — The Rite of Birth
Contrastate — Northern Twilight (from “English Embers,” on Dirter)
The Fun Years — Electricity Is A Scarce Commodity (this, and next six, from “Innature,” on Barge Recordings)
The Kallikak Family — Purity Music, Purity Sound
Bird Show — Stay High
Polmo Polpo — Farewell to the Flyer
Loren Connors — Outside My Window
Animal Hospital — Late Summertime

Liveblogging! “Music For Swimmers,” 5/6/12

May 6, 2012

Once again, covering Emma’s “Style City” today, so I decided to make excellent use of my additional 1.5 hours and play the entirety of Robert Ashley’s opera, “Now Eleanor’s Idea.” It’s one of my all-time favorites, and I’m delighted to bring it to a bigger, more awake, bunch of listeners. So many nice calls today about it, too. That always makes things nice! At any rate, if the playlist looks a little short today, remember that pieces 1 and 2 are awfully long! Thanks for listening– tune in next Sunday from 5-6pm CST on 91.1FM locally, or stream at WDBX if you’re somewhere more interesting. Until then, take care!

Stanislav Kreitchi — Voices and Movement (from “Voices and Movement,” on Electroshock)

Liveblogging! “Music for Swimmers” 4/15/12

April 15, 2012

Today was the first episode of my show in it’s new 5-6pm Sunday time slot– I think it went very well! I’m used to having a lot more space to stretch out in, so this was different, but fun. Earlier, I compared the experience to working as a short order cook after spending a long time working entirely with crock pots. My special “no interruptions” arrangement with the station manager lets me avoid playing any promos or underwriting during my show, which definitely helps. I also did a lot more quick transitions than usual– I won’t do this for every show, but I wanted to kick things off with some improv mixing and collage. It felt right. Ordinarily, I intend to stick by my “no excerpts” rule, which may prove interesting in terms of focus during a one-hour show. There’s definitely a lot less room for error, though; I believe this may be an interesting challenge. If you heard today’s show, leave a comment and tell me what you thought. I’m curious how things went on your end. –DaveX

“It’s Too Damn Early” is now… “Music For Swimmers”

April 15, 2012

With the move to the new 5-6pm show time, I realized that “It’s Too Damn Early” was no longer an appropriate name for my show. So, while my focus on experimental music, the avant-garde, sound art, and noise has not changed– the name has!

Say hello to “Music For Swimmers.”

I love picking out names for things. This time around, I looked to John Cage for inspiration, and found it in one of his many stories– in this case, one that was included on his Folkways recording with David Tudor, “Indeterminacy.” I’ve reproduced a screen capture from an online archive of the stories below, though I hope that you’ll check out the other stories as well. I’m not sure how the name works out if you think about it too hard, but I enjoyed the absurdity– a program of music for people who aren’t listening? Electrical devices in a marine environment? I suspect that “Music For Swimmers” will find its meaning with time. Until then, I’m looking forward to spending that time listening and staying afloat with you. –DaveX

Before you go any further, do yourself a favor and pick up a copy of “Closed Encounters of the 4 Minds,” on Public Eyesore. I’m really quite taken with this one– some of the old-school electronic sounds just leap out at you, and it doesn’t hurt that the 4th track is ridiculously catchy. The album hasn’t left my stereo since it arrived, so you’ve been warned. Don’t sleep on it!

Liveblogging! “Fashion Pickle” 2/24/12

February 24, 2012

I decided to be silly today while covering for another DJ’s broadcast– I’ve announced that the show is titled “Fashion Pickle,” and that it is a six-hour broadcast of Chinese opera, barbershop quartets, and feminist news. So far, nobody has called in to correct me that the “Rhizome” album is not (as stated) a mash-up of these three themes. It’s a derpy joke, but nobody seems to have noticed.

I’m doing my best to spread some knowledge, though! Two new releases from Pogus Productions, for real! I’m especially digging Leo Kupper’s latest, which again has birdsong/voice track with Anna Maria Kieffer– I can’t get enough of their recordings. Unfortunately, that’s not the case with the entirety of today’s audience! I’ve had some seriously depressing, abusive calls come in this afternoon, including one local businessman who seems to have confused me with his personal jukebox. After a shitstorm of abusive AND supportive phone calls, I went on-air to lay out a quick history of bird and wildlife-inspired recordings off the top of my head. I don’t usually explain these sorts of things, preferring that listeners make their own connections and interpretations, but this seemed like a special case! I was also interested to receive a call from my station manager, who expressed his full support for my “seriously challenging shit,” a phrase which I now wish I could use on-air as my show’s tagline.

Lastly, go check out the beautiful photographs accompanying the writeup of “Lind Raud, Aastaajad,” at the Invisible Birds site. I want to go there!

Thanks for listening, everybody!

Liveblogging! “It’s Too Damn Early,” 2/18/12

February 18, 2012

It’s freakin’ Promo City over here, so next week is going to be awesome! I’m staring down new stuff from Tom Hamilton, idM TheftAble, and if, Bwana; not to mention a couple new ones from the Pogus label as well– Noah Creshevsky, Leo Kupper… goddamn, these guys know what moves me! If that wasn’t good enough, there’s also new stuff from the Cuneiform and Abzu labels, and a couple self-releases from brand-new folks– it’s always good to hear from new people, keep ’em coming!

I’m definitely looking forward to playing this Davis Redford Triad LP, “The Mystical Path of the Number Eighty-Six,” a Holy Mountain release that probably won’t make many journeys out of my home in the future. I hope you’re listening! (And hey, a big thanks to Lou’s Records in Encinitas, CA for helping me find this one!)

OMG, can’t believe I forgot (I told you this was a good night!) but I’ve also got two new LPs from ZeroMoon, whose “intelligent noise music” has always rung true to my ears– Blue Sausage Infant’s “Negative Space,” and “District of Noise Vol. 4,” which features Washington D.C. area noise artists. I won’t have time for both on today’s program, but you’ll definitely hear each over the next few weeks, most likely on both programs.

Lastly, The Claudia Quintet (with Theo Bleckmann) will be in St. Louis for a New Music Circle event on March 2nd at the 560 Music Center Ballroom. I’ll have some free tickets to giveaway next week, so make plans to listen in– maybe they’ll be yours!

Liveblogging! “It’s Too Damn Style” 1/22/12

January 22, 2012

I’m covering for “Style City” today, so it’s feeling a bit bright and sunny in the studio– even with all these horrid grey skies! I imagine that will make today’s show a bit different than usual. Another big influence on today’s programming will be the presence of the brand-spanking-new “L” volume of GX Jupitter-Larsen’s “Zelphabet” series. As any reader/listener of mine will know, I’m a big fan. In addition to being an incredible source for noise lovers to discover overlooked or under-promoted musicians, the quality of the contributions has been consistently high– compilations might be a dime a dozen, but there are precious few (especially of this scope) that would honestly elicit such description.

Eric Glick-Rieman — The Past, Aerated (from “In My Mind, her Image Was Reversed,” on Accretions)
Toshio Kajiwara, Marina Rosenfeld, Christian Marclay — New York, 8/21/03 (from “DJ Trio,” on Asphodel)
