July 22, 2012

Playing some cool tapes today, along with some older stuff that I’ve been digging recently. Just as a reminder, you can catch “Music For Swimmers” (formerly “It’s Too Damn Early”) at its nice new broadcast time every Sunday afternoon from 5-6 p.m., CST.

Liveblogging! “Music for Swimmers” 4/15/12

April 15, 2012

Today was the first episode of my show in it’s new 5-6pm Sunday time slot– I think it went very well! I’m used to having a lot more space to stretch out in, so this was different, but fun. Earlier, I compared the experience to working as a short order cook after spending a long time working entirely with crock pots. My special “no interruptions” arrangement with the station manager lets me avoid playing any promos or underwriting during my show, which definitely helps. I also did a lot more quick transitions than usual– I won’t do this for every show, but I wanted to kick things off with some improv mixing and collage. It felt right. Ordinarily, I intend to stick by my “no excerpts” rule, which may prove interesting in terms of focus during a one-hour show. There’s definitely a lot less room for error, though; I believe this may be an interesting challenge. If you heard today’s show, leave a comment and tell me what you thought. I’m curious how things went on your end. –DaveX

I need your help!

April 8, 2012

UPDATE: Thanks to your efforts, I will be moving to the new time slot! More details are available here.

An opportunity has come up for me to change the time slot of my long-running “It’s Too Damn Early” radio program. I would be able to broadcast in the daytime on the weekend, immediately following my daughter’s “Style City” broadcast.

I have had a request to transfer my show to a daytime slot in since last autumn, but the station manager wants to “think about it.” I thought it might be nice if anyone reading this could send him an e-mail– let him know that you dig experimental music on WDBX, and that you support moving “It’s Too Damn Early” to Sundays from 5-6 p.m. CC me in your mail, and I’ll give you a personal shout-out in my next show!

Thanks! –DaveX

Helpful Birthday Hints, #6 in a series of 12

April 7, 2012

I’ve got to step it up, there’s only 16 days to go until my birthday! (I imagine this applies to you as well, yes?)

Anyways– check out the Sacred Phrases label catalog. Lots of awesome tapes there! I’m particularly excited about the Hobo Cubes tape, but feel free to surprise me with something different and interesting.

Apologies for anyone listening to “Sounds Like Radio

April 1, 2012

Apparently, someone messed up and re-ran a show from two weeks back. I have no idea why– there’s a perfectly good, brand-new episode that was supposed to be running right now. So much for listening along and liveblogging the show! If you heard it already, I apologize. If not, perhaps this twist of fate was intended for you. –DaveX

Helpful Birthday Hints, #5 in a series of 12

March 31, 2012

So NNA Tapes did an eight-tape compilation of artists from Burlington, Vermont. Obsessive, unwieldy, obscure– it’s hitting all my buttons! Perhaps you can find a copy at Discogs, I bet.

Helpful Birthday Hints, #3 & 4 in a series of 12

March 29, 2012

Today’s hint is a double– two books from one of my favorite authors, Sinclair Lewis. You can choose from Ann Vickers or Bethel Merriday. Supposedly, Ann Vickers is a better read, but since I’m intending to read all of his books it really doesn’t matter. Go with the cheapest, or rich out and grab me both!

New things I learned today

March 25, 2012

Three terms– anthrophony, biophony, geophony. If I give you the context (soundwalks, etc) I’m sure you’ll figure it out. Some other interesting ideas from today’s workshop leader Andrea Polli (by way of Barry Truax) relate to hearing exercises, pre-soundwalk:

1) Listen for the most distant sound.
2) Listen for the nearest sound.
3) Listen for the loudest sound.
4) Listen for the quietest sound.

These were interesting, and a bit more difficult to discern at times than I would have guessed. We also spoke about soundmarks, sound signals, and the keynote– all terms I am familiar with, but it is always nice to refresh and re-think.

Helpful Birthday Hints, #2 in a series of 12

March 23, 2012

Today’s hint is posed as a question: do you like me in STEREO? Yes? Then I’ll need another mic cable. Oh look! I happen to have a link…

Helpful Birthday Hints, #1 in a series of 12

March 20, 2012

As is my custom, I’m hitting you over the head (repeatedly) with things I’d like for my birthday. I’m turning 34 this year, which is a pivotal birthday, as it marks the first time many of you will choose to send me a gift. I’m planning to remember it fondly for years to come, so please don’t let me down.

So here it is, my first Helpful Birthday Hint– boy, I sure do think this new book from Bernie Krause looks awesome. Even the title, “The Great Animal Orchestra: Finding the Origins of Music in the World’s Wild Places,” is pretty darned great. It sure would be nice to read it someday around April 23rd.

Liveblogging! “It’s Too Damn Early” 2/25/12

February 25, 2012

Today’s “Fashion Pickle” show gave me a lot of good ideas for tonight’s “It’s Too Damn Early” broadcast– sometimes, covering for another DJ is pretty useful! Of course, that has very little to do with my excitement about this new release on Ilse, ” MegaWHAT? Live at The Stone;” which features Tom Hamilton, id M Theft Able, and if, Bwana– it’s another one of those super groups I’m half-inclined is the product of some yet-to-evaporate dream.

Covering for “Style City” 2/5/12

February 5, 2012

Mo was feeling unwell today, so I took over “Style City” for her this afternoon– with no plan to watch the Super Bowl, I probably ended up having more fun that I ordinarily would have! That’s not to say that I don’t enjoy her broadcasts, but let’s face it, I dig being at the controls even more. Today’s was a damn fine set, if I do say so myself. I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did!

There’s no broadcast next week for either of us, though– we’ll be on the road– so be sure to re-join “It’s Too Damn Early” in its regular time on Feburary 18th, with “Style City” re-appearing on the 19th. Until then, take care!
